Donovan McNabb won’t be losing his starting job. Not this quickly anyway.
Minnesota Vikings coach Leslie Frazier did his best to put quarterback unrest to rest, for a week at least, but making it clear that he’s not ready to push the veteran aside for first-round draft pick Christian Ponder.
The Vikings are off to an 0-4 start. They are one of four winless teams remaining, including the Indianapolis Colts (0-3) who play tonight at Tampa Bay. Frazier is the only new head coach to be winless at this juncture.
“Based on these four games we've had this season, we're not at a point where we're making a quarterback change,” Frazier said, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “There are a lot of things that we need to correct on our football team based on the fact that we're 0-4. But at this point, a quarterback change isn't one of those changes.”
Frazier said he’s seen progress. The Vikings, after blowing double-digit halftime leads in three consecutive games, lost 22-17 on Sunday at Kansas City to a previously winless Chiefs team. McNabb completed 18 of 30 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns.
"If you look at Donovan's performance on Sunday, there was much more consistency in some of his throws," Frazier said.
