After watching Tony Romo orchestrate an epic comeback for the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made sure everyone knew that he still believes in his quarterback.
“There’s no issue about faith in Romo at any place in this organization, period, any place,” Jones said, via Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News. “There’s no issue regarding Tony. I had all the confidence in the world in him on the last drive. He has the ability and gives us the best chance to go down and score a touchdown. We didn’t get it done, but we have a lot of faith in Romo.”
Jones’ statement shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Given Romo’s history of late-game troubles, if Jones had faith in him before Sunday there isn’t much reason why he wouldn’t have faith in him after Sunday. What’s more, Romo brought the team from behind to win games in Weeks Two and Three so you’ve got to take the good with the bad.
Jones didn’t have anything to say about a run-in with Romo on the sideline just before the team’s final offensive drive. Cameras caught Romo yanking his arm away from Jones after the owner grabbed Romo’s jersey just before the Cowboys went back out onto the field. The clip has made the rounds with some wondering if Romo was directing some hostility Jones’ way.
That seems like a rather ridiculous read given the circumstances. Romo was in the middle of a miserable day, trying to lead his team back to win a game and likely would have responded the same way to anyone who chose that exact moment to strike up a conversation. That Jones would be the kind of person who thinks that’s his place is par for the course, but Romo’s reaction doesn’t really offer us any insight outside of the already obvious point that Jones should find a better way to chat with his employees.
