McCarthy says the “door is open” for Rodgers to play

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who suffered his second concussion of the season in Week 14 at Detroit, officially is doubtful to play on Sunday night when Green Bay travels to New England.

With doubtful technically representing a 25-percent chance that the player will play, it indeed appears that Rodgers’ status is perched at a one-in-four proposition.

“I’m hopeful to make a decision by tomorrow, but the door is open for Aaron Rodgers to play in the game,” coach Mike McCarthy said Friday, according to Jason Wilde of ESPNMilwaukee.com.

“There’s not a written script for this,” McCarthy explained.  “The goal as I stated Monday, Wednesday and Thursday would be to make a decision by Saturday.  But with the late start Sunday, we can leave the door open for that.”

On Thursday, coach Mike McCarthy dropped strong hints that Rodgers wouldn’t play, saying that the team would “make a decision by Saturday” and that Rodgers’ status “will be clear by the time we travel to New England,” and that it was “not going to be a game-time decision.”

The next key threshold will be whether Rodgers indeed makes the trip with the team.  Though making the trip doesn’t mean he’ll play, not making the trip obviously means he won’t.

Under league rules, Rodgers must be cleared both by team doctors and by an independent neurologist before he can return to action.  Wilde says that, during Rodgers’ visit to the media room on Friday, Rodgers was “upbeat” and “acting very much like his normal self.”

If he hopes to avoid a third concussion the next time he’s on the field, Rodgers will need to resist acting like his normal self when it comes to whether he’ll slide after deciding to run with the ball.
