Vikings Won't Reach For Quarterback

With only Joe Webb and Rhett Bomar signed at the position for next season, it's no secret that the Minnesota Vikings are in the market for a quarterback.

That search has led to the Vikings working out and meeting with nearly every quarterback expected to be drafted on the first two days of the 2011 NFL Draft, but vice president of player personnel Rick Spielman says the team won't reach to fill the position, Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports.

"There are some things that I've tried to come up with that are out-of-the-box thinking as we process these quarterbacks," Spielman said. "I still think you can't force quarterback. If you're not comfortable with it, you just can't because you're just going to make a mistake. So if we take a quarterback at some point in the draft, it's going to be something that we definitely feel comfortable with."

Auburn's Cam Newton and Missouri's Blaine Gabbert, regarded as the top two quarterbacks in this year's class, will likely be gone by the time the Vikings are on the clock with the 12th pick. University of Washington quarterback Jake Locker could be an option, but the Vikings have other directions they can go.

"There are a lot of other needs to fill at that 12th position if it's not a quarterback," he said. "I can tell you this: We're going to take the best player available when it comes to our pick. That I know."
