Cowboys TE Martellus Bennett Hopes for QB Competition in Dallas

Dallas Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett hopes Jon Kitna gets to compete with Tony Romo for the team's starting job, Tim MacMahon of ESPN Dallas reports.

"I loved playing with Kitna," Bennett said during a Tuesday appearance on ESPN 103.3's Ben & Skin Show. "Kitna is one of my favorite people to play with. Just being out there on the field with that guy just makes you play even harder. He made some things happen in limited time, so I think if he got a longer chance, he'd be able to do more.

"I hope there's a chance for a quarterback competition this year. Every position, I think we need to put more competition into it."

A second-round pick out of Texas A&M in 2008, Bennett has caught 68 passes for 702 yards and 4 touchdowns during his 46-game career. Bennett had a career-high 33 receptions in 2010, with 19 of his receptions coming after Romo was lost for the season to a broken collarbone.

MacMahon notes that Bennett's comments echo those made by wide receiver Roy Williams after Romo was injured.

While the 38-year old Kitna played well at times last season, it's highly unlikely that first-year head coach Jason Garrett will invite a quarterback controversy by opening the position up to competition.

Romo, who turns 31 later this month, is a three-time Pro Bowler, with two of those coming in years Garrett was the team's offensive coordinator, who is due $9 million in base salary this season. As long as he's healthy, he'll continue to be "The Man" in Big D.
