Ravens WR Derrick Mason Calls Roger Goodell "A Joke"

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Derrick Mason responded to Roger Goodell's push for HGH testing in the next collective bargaining agreement by calling the NFL Commissioner "a joke".

Via Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk.com:

"He needs to stop crying about blood testing and HGH — he needs to get a deal done," Mason said during an appearance on 105.7 The Fan in Baltimore. "He (Goodell) to me, is just a joke...

"Blood tests? I don’t know," said Mason. "They’ve been crying about blood tests for the longest time. I think that’s too intrusive. There’s other ways and other methods, I think, to go about testing for it."

Smith points out that Mason is incorrect about the current availability of other HGH testing methods.

There are legitimate questions about the effectiveness of current blood-based tests, though, and a concern the NFLPA (or MLBPA) have about agreeing to a blood-based test for HGH is that it may stop or slow research on a less intrusive urine-based test.

Since every issue is a pawn on the labor chess board, I'm under the impression that the league's vocal push for access to the players' blood is a response to the players' call for the owners to open up the books.
