Chargers Sign S Bob Sanders
Free agent safety Bob Sanders plans to sign a one-year deal with the San Diego Chargers, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
Sanders, 30, has 290 tackles, 3.5 quarterback sacks, and six interceptions over the past seven seasons. A two-time Pro Bowler, Sanders was named the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year in 2007.
Limited to nine games over the three seasons, the Colts released Sanders on February 18. Sanders passed a physical with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and paid free agent visits to the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets.
"We are all very excited to add Bob Sanders to our defense," Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said. "We have always held him in high regard. He’s a smart, physical, instinctive player. His intensity and playmaking ability can make an immediate impact on our defense."
Sanders has played strong safety during his tenure with the Colts, but due to his injury history, may be better off playing further off the line of scrimmage.
Three of the Chargers' top four safeties are unsigned for 2010, including Eric Weddle, who has started at free safety the last three safeties.
A second-round pick out of Utah in 2007, Weddle has 358 tackles, 4 quarterback sacks, and 6 interceptions over the last three seasons. Weddle may be looking for $7 million per year and $15 million in guarantees on the open market.
The Chargers placed a "First Round" restricted free agent tender on Weddle on Wednesday. With four accrued seasons, Weddle figures to become an unrestricted free agent when a new collective bargaining agreement is reached.
