Five days later, Bears indeed release Chester Taylor
A year ago, the Chicago Bears made running back Chester Taylor one of the first players to sign in free agency.
Today, they made him one of their first cuts on the final day to trim down to the 53-man roster.
Taylor leaves well compensated. He signed a $12.5 million, four-year contract and it was heavily frontloaded. He received $7 million last season. The Bears also paid tight end Brandon Manumaleuna $6.105 million last season, another expensive one-year free agent addition.
Taylor had split the facility on Monday after a meeting with coach Lovie Smith, believing he had been released. The Bears said it was a misunderstanding. So, Taylor returned, played Thursday night and now he's gone because the Bears could not trade him.
Taylor averaged 2.38 yards per carry last season, the lowest by a running back with a minimum of 100 attempts since the merger in 1970. He’ll be 32 later this month but has a track record for durability and should catch on somewhere.
Taylor wasn’t the only veteran to be shown the door. The team also informed defensive tackle Marcus Harrison, a third-round pick in 2008, that he is being waived. Harrison never panned out and he showed up out of shape for training camp for the second time in three summers. He played less than 10 percent of the snaps last season and there were five defensive tackles ahead of him on the depth chart.
The Bears need to clear 10 more roster spots to make it to 53.
