No surprise: Super Bowl XLV gets boffo ratings

It’s time for the last record television ratings update of the year.
While the ratings are only preliminary, early indications are that this year’s Super Bowl will have the most total viewers of all time.  Overnight ratings had the game 3% higher than the record numbers from last year’s record Colts-Saints thriller.
Super Bowl XLV also had an incredible 71 share; that means more than two-thirds of all televisions being watched during the Super Bowl were tuned to Packers-Steelers.  That’s the highest share since 1982, when there were far fewer television sets and channel options.
The game had a 59.7 overnight rating in the Pittsburgh and Milwaukee markets.  That ties the second-highest market ratings ever behind Chicago for the 1986 Super Bowl.
