Singletary wanted to avoid “horrific” quarterback change

Mike Singletary thought about pulling Alex Smith during San Francisco’s desultory 34-7 loss in San Diego, but decided not to because Troy Smith didn’t have any first team reps during the short week.
“It would have been unfair to Troy Smith,” Singletary said after the game via the Sacramento Bee.  “It is a different thing from going from Troy to Alex,” he said. “I think it is a horrific thing to go from Alex to Troy.”
49ers fans probably think watching this team is horrific.  But as we pointed out last night, the 5-9 49ers are not done yet.  There is a very good chance they will enter next week’s game against the Rams with a chance to still win the division.
Singletary said he needs to watch the film before deciding who to start at quarterback.  If we had to guess, we suspect Alex Smith will get the call again.
We can’t promise whether the results of the decision will be horrific or not.
