Texans like what they have at defensive tackle
To hear Wade Phillips tell it, he doesn’t run a traditional 3-4 defense. His scheme is closer to a “5-2″ with two inside linebackers and five defensive linemen that can rush the passer.
The transition of Mario Williams to outside linebacker has received a lot of attention this offseason, but we’d be more worried about the nose tackle spot. Phillips worked wonders with Jay Ratliff at the position in Dallas, and thinks he can do the same with Shaun Cody and Earl Mitchell.
The Texans don’t see nose tackle as a big need, according to a recent chat by John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.
["Phillips] likes what he’s got,” McClain writes.
Cody has consistently underwhelmed as a pro. Mitchell is entering his second season.
I am somewhat ashamed to admit that I am drinking the Wade Phillips Kool Aid this year, largely because of his amazing track record turning defenses around as a coordinator. If one spot causes me to hesitate, it’s their interior line.
