During his "Cold Hard Facts" segment on The Kevin Calabro Show on 710 ESPN Seattle, Hall of Famer John Clayton says it's becoming "less likely" that quarterback Matthew Hasselbeck returns to the Seattle Seahawks in 2011.
"I'm not optimistic now. I'm starting to think that it may not happen," Clayton said (at the 12-minute mark of the podcast) on Monday. "It seems like they did put a good effort in, but they didn't come to the right number.
"And now it's put the Seahawks in a position where I think what will happen is, if free agency would start--and we all don't know when--I think they'll let him test the market. And that could be dangerous, because he could go someplace else. But at this stage I'd say the odds are now slipping away that Matt's going to be here."
According to Clayton, the Arizona Cardinals, Miami Dolphins, and Minnesota Vikings could have interest in signing Hasselbeck, should the 35-year old hit the open market.
Hasselbeck's experience and success (three Pro Bowls) in the West Coast offense frequently linked him to the Vikings during Brad Childress' tenure. Former Atlanta Falcons quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave was hired to run Minnesota's offense, replacing Darrell Bevell, who is now the current Seahawks' offensive coordinator.
Musgrave spent six seasons as a back-up quarterback in the NFL, including four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, where his first offensive coordinator was Mike Holmgren, who brought Hasselbeck to Seattle in 2001.
