Saints Place RFA Tenders on Carl Nicks, Pierre Thomas

The New Orleans Saints have placed restricted free agent tenders on Pro Bowl guard and veteran running back Pierre Thomas.

Adam Caplan of FOXSports.com reports that Nicks, who has three accrued seasons, received a first-round tender. Under the expiring collective bargaining agreement, that would carry a $2.611 million base salary in 2011.

A fifth-round pick out of Nebraska in 2008, Nicks has started 45 of the last 48 games for the Saints. Nicks earned $470,000 in 2010, the final year of his three-year, $1.572 million rookie contract.

Nicks led the Saints in "Performance-Based Pay" in 2008 and 2009, earning checks totaling $652,346. The NFL discontinued the program in the uncapped season.

Based on the value of tender reported by Mike Triplett of The Times-Picayune, Thomas received a second round tender for the second consecutive off-season.

Reportedly worth $1.8524 million, the tender is 110% of the $1.684 million Thomas played for last season.

Slowed by an ankle injury, the Saints' leading rusher during the Super Bowl season had just 269 yards and two touchdowns in six games. Thomas was placed on injured reserve before the Saints' playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
