Ryan Mallett to Work Out For Panthers
Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett is scheduled to have a private workout with the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post reports.
The Panthers hold the first overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.
Mallett (6-7, 253) began his college career at the University of Michigan before transferring to Arkansas in 2008. A two-year starter for the Razorbacks, Mallett completed 60.3% of his 814 pass attempts for 7,496 yards with 62 touchdowns and 19 interceptions.
NFL talent evaluators raves about his arm strength and accuracy, but the brash Mallett has been dogged by questions about his maturity level. Mallett was arrested for public intoxication in 2009, and there have been rumors tying Mallett to drug use.
Carolina used a pair of 2010 draft picks on quarterbacks, including a second-round draft choice on Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen, who started 10 games for the 2-14 Panthers as a rookie.
Though general manager Marty Hurney reportedly still thinks Clausen can be the long-term starter, the Panthers are looking hard at the quarterbacks slated to go in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft, including Auburn University quarterback Cam Newton.
