NFL Competition Committee Proposes Changes to Kickoffs

Out of concerns about injuries, particularly concussions, the NFL Competition Committee is recommending changes to kickoffs for next season.

Atlanta Falcons President Rich McKay, who chairs the committee, announced the proposal on a conference call with the media.

Under the proposal, kickoffs would be moved to from the 30 to the 35-yard line, with the receiving team being awarded the ball at the 25-yard line following a touchback.

Additionally, all wedge-blocking, even two-man wedges, would be eliminated. Players on kick coverage units would be limited to a five-yard running start, a reduction from the 10-15 yard starts they currently receive, Mark Maske of the Washington Post reports.

At the Competition Committee's suggestion, the NFL eliminated the use of three-and four-man wedges on kick returns before the 2009 season.

The proposal will be voted upon by NFL clubs at next week's owners meeting in New Orleans. Passage of proposals require 24 of 32 votes.
