New York Jets safety Jim Leonhard has suffered what coach Rex Ryan calls a “severe shin injury” and will not play in the team’s game at New England (9-2) on Monday night.
Leonhard was injured Friday during team drills—which are closed to the media—and had to be carted from the field. Ryan says he is unsure how long Leonhard, who calls the defensive signals in the secondary, will be sidelined. Ryan calls the injury a “huge blow to us.”
Leonhard was hurt when he collided with wide receiver Patrick Turner. Eric Smith will be the primary replacement.
Leonhard also returns punts, and that duty may fall to Kyle Wilson, Jerricho Cotchery or Santonio Holmes for the Jets (9-2).
