Report: Jets will keep Sanchez into preseason
The six-ring circus isn’t leaving New York City any time soon. Two days after Jets G.M. John Idzik declined to declare that incumbent starter Mark Sanchez will be a member of the team in training camp, Bob Glauber of Newsday reports that Sanchez will indeed remain on the team.
Citing an unnamed league source, Glauber reports that the Jets are expected to keep Sanchez into the preseason, and to let him compete for the starting job.
The Jets have no reason to prematurely cut Sanchez, given that they’ll owe him $8.25 million whether he’s on the roster or not in 2013. Given that the Jets will be required to pay Sanchez the full amount of the money within 30 days after cutting him, it makes sense to delay what feels like the inevitable, given the decision to use a high second-round pick on quarterback Geno Smith.
Allowing Sanchez to remain with the team means that he’ll earn a full $500,000 workout bonus.

Report: Jets will consider cutting Sanchez
The Jets owe quarterback Mark Sanchez $8.25 million in 2013, whether he’s on the team or not.
Suddenly, “or not” is becoming a viable option.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that, with the selection of quarterback Geno Smith, the Jets will now consider releasing Sanchez.
It makes sense. Apart from the fact that half of the six quarterbacks on the roster eventually will have to go, the Jets need to pick a lane and stay in it. If Sanchez starts, Smith will always be looming. If Smith starts, Sanchez’s ability to adjust to being a backup will always be scrutinized.
The decision to pick Smith could mean that it’s time for the Jets to grab the Sanchez Band-Aid and rip it off. In one fast, painful motion.
Doing so would trigger a significant cap charge. Even with a post-June 1 designation, Sanchez would count for $12.353 million ($12.853 million if he gets his workout bonus) and $4.8 million in 2014.

Sanchez on Jets: “My heart and soul is into this thing”
The Jets aren’t necessarily doing anything to show unconditional love to Mark Sanchez.
But Sanchez said Monday he was committed to making things right.
While he’s been left to twist in the wind and given the opportunity to “compete” for the job that was previously his, he’s taken steps including working with former NFL quarterback Jeff Garcia to come to camp ready.
“The only thing that changed was the mental side, as far as the emotional side, my heart and soul is into this thing,” Sanchez said, via Conor Orr of the Newark Star-Ledger. “… That’s where my head’s at. I’m fired up about this year and I hope it’s a good one.”
Of course, it’s not just competition from David Garrard or Greg McElroy, or whomever they might draft next week. Sanchez’s name was brought up in trade discussions between the Jets and the Bucs regarding Darrelle Revis — not that the Bucs want him, but just that the Jets might like to dump his salary.
He referred to the Revis talks as “upstairs decisions,” but that’s where his fate is being decided also.
But he’s trying to keep it about football and the competition.
“I completely understand that and I think it’ll bring out the best in everyone on our team,” Sanchez said. “I totally respect that, as far as I’m concerned, I’m preparing to play well for this team and do the best I can. I’m preparing for my role and am doing everything in my control to be the best quarterback on the roster.”
At the moment, that’s not the highest bar to clear, but even that might be beyond his reach.
