Plaxico could be one and done with Jets

The final numbers for Plaxico Burress this season weren’t bad for a guy just getting out of prison. But they weren’t great for an NFL starter.

On a day when the Jets strongly backed offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, receiver Santonio Holmes, and quarterback Mark Sanchez, G.M. Mike Tannenbaum was less certain about Plaxico Burress.

“He’s really an interesting guy and he was a really good teammate. Free agency is a couple of months away, and we’ll look at everything,” Tannenbaum said via the New York Daily News.

It’s telling that the first thing Tannenbaum complimented about Burress was his blocking. He also helped in the red zone. But Burress couldn’t separate from defenders and contributed to the team’s lack of explosiveness at receiver. The team is aging in too many places. He finished with 45 catches, 612 yards, and eight touchdowns.

Unlike Schottenheimer, Holmes, and Sanchez, Burress is not under contract next year. The team could potentially bring Burress back as a role player, but it seems more likely that he’ll be one and done with the Jets.
