Colts QB Peyton Manning Discusses Recovery From Neck Surgery

Two months after undergoing a second surgical procedure on his neck this year Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning discussed his recovery with local media on Thursday.

"Nothing earth-shattering, just two months today since my surgery. Not a whole lot to report," Manning said according to Phillip Wilson of the Indianapolis Star. "Still waiting for the fusion to take place. That takes place, they thought, between two and three months. Still going slow with that.

"I still have some of the same issues I had before the fusion as far as the nerves and the regeneration. Still dealing with that, the idea being that this surgery gave me the most stability for the nerves to regenerate. That’s still a process there."

Manning remains on the 53-man roster and both he and the team hope he can at least return to the practice field in 2011. Manning says the next checkpoint in his recovery is December 1. Without Manning, the Colts are 0-8 on the season and could be in prime position to use the first overall pick on Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck.

Manning signed a five-year, $90 million contract extension with the Colts, a deal the four-time MVP characterizes as a one-year contract with a club option, worth $28 million, which is paid out over the 2013 and 2014 seasons, to extend it by four seasons. Manning says he wanted that structure because he knew he wasn't healthy when he signed the deal.
