The Rambling Gambler: Pick 6 Week 6 (Guest Column Writer Edition)

Not a good week for The Rambling Gambler, but I’m not sure I would have picked any differently.  Betting against the Seahawks seemed like a good bet.  But nothing in the NFL is a sure bet, as this week certainly proved out.  And in this whacky game that can swing from one end of the field back to another with one turnover, the Giants let this one go the other way with a 14 point swing at the end on Victor Cruz’s tipped pass.  That’s not to say that Seattle didn’t play well, however.  9.5 points is just too much to give in this season’s competitive league, where any team can turn it around, given that they are not bit by the all too pervasive injury bug.    44 points in the Metrodome epitomized the week as the pick was only off by one point.   On the lucky end, the Chargers somehow managed to hold off a storm (aka Tim Tebow)  in a second half comeback that nearly tied the game up on a two point conversion coming up short by just inches as the defender knocked the ball just out of Brandon Lloyd’s fingertips—allowing San Diego to just barely cover the spread.  It is a Game of Inches indeed!

Not all of the Rambling Gambler's picks went south, as he really put his money where his mouth is and said "I do" to his bride and jumped in with both feet.  Right about now he has really gone south on a tropical cruise honeymoon which is surely a winner for the young couple.  Now onto this week’s guest column picks:

Colts +7 versus the Bengals
I know the Bengal defense is solid, and that Indianapolis has shown nothing so far on either side of the ball.  The Colts have a very young offensive line that is quite naturally taking time to gel.  I’m not sure how well even Peyton Manning would have done behind a rookie left tackle as well.   I think that six weeks is long enough for the Colts lines to build enough cohesiveness to somehow hang in there with Cincinnati to stay within 7 points.

Panthers  +4 versus the Falcons
Carolina might be 1-4, but it isn’t because Cam Newton hasn’t put up a fight in each game.  I think this game could go down to the wire with two potent offenses loaded with weapons both in the running and passing games on both sides.

49ers +4 versus the Lions
The Lions have been good this season but have also bailed themselves out of big holes with the big play.  It doesn’t hurt to have Lady Luck on your side once in awhile either.   They certainly deserve to have the ball bounce their way after so many years of hard luck—including last season.  This is another game that goes down to the wire as things might not come so easy against a San Francisco team that is playing really well at this point in the season.

Jaguars +12 over PITTSBURGH
Given Jacksonville’s miserable season, and Pittsburgh surprisingly easy win over Tennessee last week—the Steelers should continue to roll.  This seems so logical that I had to go against my better instincts at the last minute.  Twelve points is a lot to give this season to Anybody—besides the Jags are looking to get it together and battle to turn their season around with a half decent effort.  I’ve almost convinced myself—but regardless of the argument, JUST Take the Points.

Green Bay/St. Louis OVER 47.5
The Packers couldn’t cover the Over against Atlanta on Sunday night.  They might need just a little help from the Rams in this one, but I have a feeling that Josh McDaniels will try to have Sam Bradford throw the ball around the yard to try and keep up with Aaron Rodgers.  It won’t quite be a shootout as Green Bay may easily pull away, but it will make it easier for the Packers to cover the Over this time around.

Buffalo/New York Giants OVER 50
Despite the fact that 50 is a really high total, this one could be a real shootout with both offenses clearly showing the ability to score so far in this young season.  With the defenses able to turn a turnover or two into a quick six points as well, this game could get out of hand and end up with both teams scoring in the twenties.  27-24 should do the trick—just don’t ask me to pick the winner.
