Meanwhile, the search for his missing brother near New Orleans was called off.
Reed younger brother, Brian Reed, jumped into the Mississippi River on Friday to elude police. Reed's mother, Karen Reed, told Louisiana reporters Saturday that Brian Reed's jacket and shoes have been found by authorities.
“Ed made the trip and is going to play,” Reed’s older brother, Wendell Sanchez, told the Carroll County Times in a telephone interview Saturday afternoon from the family's home in St. Rose, La. “Ed’s OK. He’s upbeat. We’re just all here at the house hoping and praying and waiting to hear something.
“Everything’s the same as far as Brian. We’re just waiting to find out what’s happening. We’re just hoping for good news and we’re not giving up hope. We appreciate everyone’s support.”
Law enforcement officials said that they were pursuing Brian Reed because his car matched a description of a car that nearly ran another car off the road. Plus, they suspected that he was driving a stolen vehicle.
“The suspect jumped into the river, went about 15 feet according to the deputy,” Sgt. Dwayne LaGrange, a spokesman for the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office told a Louisiana television station. “At some particular point they said he did witness hands and head come up and go under the water and never resurface again."
The Ravens are supporting Reed as he goes through this emotional family tragedy.
“We've been in contact as an organization,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said during a conference call Friday night. “All I want to say is our thoughts and our prayers are with the Reed family in this difficult, difficult time. We're praying like crazy in the Harbaugh house for the Reed family.
“I love Ed Reed. Hopefully, this thing will turn out OK. I haven't had a chance to talk to him. He's got his hands full right now."
A former NFL Defensive Player of the Year and a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, Ed Reed led the NFL with eight interceptions this season. He was limited in practice this week due to bruised ribs and underwent offseason hip surgery, beginning the season on the physically unable to perform list.
Karen Reed, Reed's mother, told reporters that Brian Reed has struggled in the past with drugs and alcohol.
“He was a good person,” Karen Reed said. “He kind of had a little run in with drugs and stuff. He had kind of got off it. Other than that, he was alright."
