As widely expected, the Carolina Panthers plan to make Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera the fourth head coach in franchise history.
Adam Schefter of ESPN report that Rivera has agreed to take the job, and that the two sides are working on a formal agreement. Barring a contractual snafu, Rivera will soon be officially named the successor to John Fox.
Fox, who joined the Panthers after working as the Giants’ defensive coordinator under Jim Fassel, spent nine years in Charlotte, winning 78 and losing 74 regular-season games. He led the Panthers to as many playoff appearances (three) as sub-.500 seasons (also three). The Panthers twice finished 8-8 under Fox, and it became clear after last year’s .500 finish that Fox had only one more year on the job.
Dom Capers led the Panthers from their debut in 1995 through 1998. He was succeeded by George Seifert, whose tenure ended with a disastrous 1-15 record in 2001.
Rivera inched onto the “A” list after serving as defensive coordinator for the Bears, culminating in a Super Bowl appearance in 2006. Rivera wasn’t hired elsewhere, and the Bears eventually opted not to bring him back.
