Barring something unexpected, the Carolina Panthers could name Ron Rivera as their new head coach later today.
Rivera is in Charlotte, N.C., for a second interview with club officials and all signs point to the 49-year-old defensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers getting the job.
The Panthers would only tell the Charlotte Observer that Rivera is in for a meeting that will include owner Jerry Richardson after the initial round of interviews with candidates was conducted by team president Danny Morrison and general manager Marty Hurney.
Per the report, New York Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell could be the backup plan. Nothing is finalized with Rivera but there are not expected to be any road bumps.
Indianapolis Colts wide receivers coach Ron Turner is considered a possibility as the offensive coordinator on Rivera’s staff. They worked together with the Chicago Bears for three seasons and had a close relationship. Reports also indicate that Rivera could bring Chargers tight end coach Rob Chudzinski with him from San Diego to serve as the offensive coordinator. Last year, Chudzinski turned down an opportunity to interview with the Bears for their offensive coordinator position.
Club officials are very concerned about the direction of the team’s offense after it bottomed out last season.
