Harbaugh adds Ed Donatell to Niners’ staff

49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh went a long way toward filling out his coaching staff Friday by hiring Vic Fangio to coordinate the defense, Greg Roman to coordinate the offense, and Tim Drevno to oversee the tight ends and/or offensive line. All three coaches were on Harbaugh’s staff at Stanford.
Harbaugh has now gone outside his collegiate coaching pipeline to tab longtime NFL assistant Ed Donatell as defensive backs coach, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Donatell last coached in Denver, overseeing a secondary that helped the Broncos to rank third in the NFL in 2009. Their ranking fell to 25th in 2010, mostly because of injuries and the worst pass rush in football.
Donatell brings to San Francisco a wealth of experience both as a coordinator and position coach. He was Jim Mora’s defensive coordinator in Atlanta from 2004 until 2006, and ran the defense for Mike Sherman in Green Bay from 2000 to 2003.
Donatell was fired by Sherman after this infamous play.

Footnote*--Donatell coached defensive backs in the collegiate ranks as well including a staff I worked for at Cal State Fullerton from which he joined Pete Carrol's staff in New York (Jets).
