Matt Cassel wins AFC offensive player of the month

Matt Cassel has done something that Joe Montana, Trent Green, and, um, Tyler Thigpen never could in a Chiefs uniform.  He won the AFC offensive player of the month award, joining Steve Deberg as the only Chiefs quarterback to win the honor.

For the month of November, Cassel completed 90 of 144 passes (62.5%) for 1,111 yards with a league leading 12 TDs and only one interception.  His +18 touchdown to interception differential is second best in the league behind his old teammate Tom Brady.

We’re a little surprised Dwayne Bowe didn’t get the award, but can’t argue with this pick too much.

Cassel and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis continue to author one of the most impressive improvement stories in the league.  Cassel seems to grow game-by-game after a sluggish start to the season.  Weis deserves a ton of credit for helping Cassel while also directing the league’s top-ranked rushing attack and fourth-highest scoring offense.

At one point earlier this year, we wondered if Cassel was a lock to return to Kansas City because of the $12.25 million he was making next season.

It’s safe to say he’ll be back now, just like it’s safe to say there won’t be any more cries in Kansas City for Brodie Croyle to come off the bench.
