The Detroit Lions caught a break today.
Boy, they sure couldn’t buy one on Sunday at Soldier Field, though.
Lions coach Jim Schwartz announced this afternoon that quarterback Matthew Stafford will not require surgery on his right shoulder after he was forced out of the game late in the first half when Chicago Bears defensive end Julius Peppers drove him into the turf on a strip/sack. Stafford remained in a sling for the remainder of the game and the impotent Lions’ offense was incapable of scoring with backup Shaun Hill in the game.
“We’ll know more Wednesday,” Schwartz said, according to the Detroit News, when asked about a timetable for Stafford.
Stafford missed two games last season when he suffered a dislocated knee cap on a hit by former Bears defensive end Adewale Ogunleye. He then injured his left shoulder later in the season.
The Lions were not so fortunate on Sunday. Hill looked to complete a 25-yard touchdown pass to Calvin Johnson with 24 seconds remaining but the initial call was changed by officials and then a replay review upheld the incompletion.
At least the Lions will not be without Stafford for a significant period of time.
