Rex doesn’t want to keep 3 QBs up, but he might

Like most coaches, Jets boss Rex Ryan doesn’t want to keep three quarterbacks active if he doesn’t have to.
But he said he’d consider it this week, with Tim Tebow questionable with sore ribs and Greg McElroy apparently the next choice if they have to pull Mark Sanchez’s short leash.
“It would certainly be a consideration to have three quarterbacks active,” Ryan said, via Seth Walder of the New York Daily News. “It’s something you don’t really want to do. You will very rarely have three quarterbacks up in today’s game.”
Tebow’s being deemed a game-time decision, but Ryan said “probably not” when asked if Tebow would play his normal special teams role if active.
Most expect McElory to be next in line, and Ryan said the former Alabama quarterback earned some confidence last week.
“He’s been fantastic, I mean, he’s been absolutely fantastic,” Ryan said. “And when he went in, he made the most of it, did a tremendous job. I think he gained the respect probably from his teammates more than anything.”
While the local fans in Jacksonville might not like it, plugging McElroy in if Sanchez falters may give the Jets the best chance, since the throwing aspect hasn’t been there when Tebow was well.

Rex Ryan’s sticking with Mark Sanchez

It was an ugly, ugly day for the Jets offense on Sunday, but it wasn’t ugly enough to convince Rex Ryan to make a change at quarterback.
Ryan said from the podium of his postgame press conference that Sanchez will remain the team’s starting quarterback because he gives the team the best chance to win. Sanchez didn’t do much to give the Jets a chance to win in the 30-9 loss to the Dolphins, completing 28-of-54 passes for 283 yards to go with a touchdown, interception and lost fumble. That touchdown came in the fourth quarter when the Jets were already down 27-3 and his earlier play was studded with the kind of inaccuracy and inability to make plays under pressure that have popped up in half his starts this season.
All of that comes with Tim Tebow standing on the sideline and doing very little offensively other than standing on the sideline. Ryan isn’t switching to Tebow during the coming bye week and he said after the game that he never thought about benching his quarterback.
“I just never thought it was the time to do it. Mark’s our quarterback,” Ryan said.
Ryan’s sticking with Sanchez after another poor game. His job security could wind up being seriously impacted by that loyalty.

Plaxico Burress is surprised no one wants him

Training camps are open and free agent receiver Plaxico Burress remains unsigned, and Burress is baffled by that.
Burress told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that he expected to have contract offers as soon as free agency started, and he assumed that in late July he’d be in camp with some NFL team.
“No doubt about it,” Burress said. “With some of the things I was able to do after being away for two years, I pretty much thought it spoke for itself. But I guess obviously not.”
Burress caught 45 passes for 612 yards and eight touchdowns last season, and he said he’s in much better shape now than he was a year ago. And yet no team seems to have any particular interest in adding Burress to its roster. That may be a result of concerns that Burress is more trouble than he’s worth in a locker room, but Burress said any perception that he’s not a good teammate is false.
“For anybody to say I was a problem in the locker room or anything like that is totally a lie,” Burress said. “All I did was come out, was a great teammate, tried to play the best football that I could play.”
Age is surely a factor in teams turning away from Burress. He’ll turn 35 in two weeks and isn’t as fast as he was when he was younger. In fact, Burress was already showing signs of slowing down even before he accidentally shot himself in the leg in 2008, ending his tenure with the Giants and landing him in prison for two years: Burress’s average yards per catch had declined for four consecutive seasons prior to his prison sentence.
But Burress says he doesn’t know why he’s not getting a chance.
“Some things you don’t have an answer to, but to me it’s just a matter of keep working hard, keep training, and keep building myself up to get back to the player I know I can be,” Burress said.
Burress may know he can be a productive NFL wide receiver, but 32 NFL general managers remain unconvinced.
