Michael Hoomanawanui is the newest Patriots tight end, but he might not have been the first choice for the job.
Mary Paoletti of CSNNewEngland.com reports that Kellen Winslow failed his physical when the team brought him in for a look on Tuesday. We don’t know if he would have been signed had the physical gone better. Winslow’s visit was being viewed as the Patriots doing due dilligence for their emergency list, but perhaps that became the idea once the team found out the condition of Winslow’s knee after multiple operations over the years.
Either way, Hoomanawanui is on the roster now and Winslow is left to search elsewhere for work in the 2012 season. It’s hard to believe he won’t find somewhere to ply his trade, even if his knee wouldn’t pass some physicals, but he may need a week or two to play out for teams to decide he’s worth bringing on board.
In other Patriots tight end news (is there any other kind?), Paoletti also reports that Visanthe Shiancoe will be placed on injured reserve with the designated to return provision that would allow him to rejoin the team after eight weeks. That’s plenty of time for more tight ends to show their wares to the Patriots.
