49ers Agree To Terms With WR Braylon Edwards

Free agent wide receiver Braylon Edwards has agreed to terms with the San Francisco 49ers, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

According to Schefter, the one-year deal is worth $3.5 million.

The 28-year-old former first-round pick out of Michigan has 326 receptions for 5,142 yards and 39 touchdowns during his six-year career with the Cleveland Browns (2005-09) and New York Jets (2009-10).

A Pro Bowler in 2007 with 80 receptions for 1,289 yards and 16 touchdowns, Edwards' production has dipped the last two seasons, with the 6-foot-3, 211-pound wideout hitting bottom with 45 receptions for 680 yards and four touchdowns in a 2009 campaign split between the Browns and Jets.

The 49ers could use a bigger target opposite starter Josh Morgan. 2010 first-round pick Michael Crabtree is expected to start, but could miss all of training camp with yet another foot injury.

In addition to decreased on-field production, Edwards has several off-field blemishes, as well. Edwards was involved in an altercation at a Cleveland nightclub before he was traded to the Jets, and was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol last September.

Edwards plead guilty to the DWI charge, and will avoid jail time and probation if he meets certain court-ordered stipulation. Edwards did not get off completely unscathed, as his probation in Ohio (for the misdemeanor assault charge) was extended for one year.
