NFL Labor Talks Break For Weekend, Deal Could Still Be Reached Next Week

Houston, we have a problem. Or do we?
Labor negotiations between players and owners will not continue through the weekend as expected. However, lawyers for both sides will continue to work in the background drafting language for a potential new collective bargaining agreement while Judge Arthur Boylan takes his scheduled vacation.
Face-to-face talks will resume Monday at the earliest according to NFL Network’s Albert Breer.
“We’re going to break for the weekend, get back to work next week,” NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith said Friday, per the Associated Press. “We continue to work hard to get something done. I know our fans want us to get something done as quickly as possible.”
Friday’s talks were characterized as “frustrating” as the rookie wage scale and free agency rules were debated.
Still, all is not lost. Mark Maske of the Washington Post reports the talks are not derailed.
“An agreement in principle next week remains well within reach,” he posted on Twitter.
It is unclear as to whether Friday’s ruling by the U.S. Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals played into the decision to forgo weekend negotiations.
