Mathis disputes report that he will hold out
Add another item to the Colts’ to-do list.
Len Pasquarelli of Sports XChange quotes a source close to defensive end Robert Mathis‘ situation that says Mathis will “never play another snap there under that [existing] contract.”
The problem for Mathis and wide receiver Reggie Wayne, who is also entering the final year of his deal, is that the Colts have to take care of Peyton Manning first. And sign their rookies. And address their other free agent holes.
Even if they wanted to give Mathis a new deal, it could take some time. Mathis made similar overtures this time last year, but his camp is reportedly “adamant” this time around. It sounds like a holdout could be on the way.
Mathis is due $3.41 million in total pay this year, which includes a $1 million roster bonus. He’s underpaid, but it could be tough to give the three-time Pro Bowler market value with so much else to do for the Colts.
