Schefter: Dalton, Ponder both likely to go in first round
PFT’s Mike Florio reported late Wednesday that the Cincinnati Bengals will be working out two quarterbacks in Texas on Friday: Christian Ponder of Florida State and Andy Dalton of TCU.
Just reading the tea leaves, the Bengals’ draft strategy — based on the two “eleventh hour” workouts — is to select Georgia receiver A.J. Green with the fourth overall pick and pray Dalton or Ponder falls to their second-rounder at No. 35.
The second part probably won’t happen, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
“It doesn’t look like either Christian Ponder or Andy Dalton,” Schefter said on SportsCenter Thursday, “is going to make it into the second round.”
Let’s assume the Bengals stick to the first portion of their apparent strategy. They’ll probably have to trade back into the first round for a quarterback. a costly proposition that will require multiple draft picks that otherwise could be used to fill Cincinnati’s numerous holes on defense.
The logic of drafting a receiver before a quarterback is obviously flawed, particularly when the biggest weakness on the roster is the most important position in pro sports. But Bengals owner Mike Brown is still holding out hope that Carson Palmer changes his mind about retirement.
It’s going to hurt when he doesn’t.
