The Steelers beat the Jets to make it to the Super Bowl, and then the Steelers had the ball in hand with two minutes to go and a chance to win the Super Bowl.
The close-but-no-cigar effort becomes more impressive when considering that the Steelers went the duration of nearly one full game by scoring only three points, and by allowing 40.
From the final ten seconds of the first half of the AFC title game until the final 20 seconds of the first half of the Super Bowl, the Steelers were on the wrong end of a 40-3 score.
The Jets scored 19 unanswered points over the final 30 minutes and 20 seconds of a 24-19 Pittsburgh win, and the Packers raced to a 21-3 lead in the first 29 minutes and 50 seconds of the Super Bowl.
If the Steelers team that showed up for the first half against the Jets and the second half against the Packers had shown up for the first half against the Packers, the Steelers may have won their seventh Super Bowl. Then again, if the Steelers with two minutes to play had played like they did in crunch time during Super Bowl XLIII, the Steelers still would have pulled it off, despite that 40-3 stretch of futility.
