Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is coming off a nearly flawless game against the Falcons last weekend. But as a good breakdown of the game on ESPN’s NFL Matchup demonstrated, the Falcons’ defense practically gave Rodgers an engraved invitation to beat them by putting a spy on Rodgers — and that’s not something the Bears are going to do.
“I was shocked by how the Atlanta Falcons chose to attack Aaron Rodgers with a spy,” analyst Merril Hoge said. “You take a guy away as a pass rusher, or you take a guy out of coverage? That’s a big mistake. Week 17 against the Chicago Bears, they didn’t do that. They did a very good job of attacking Aaron Rodgers.”
As Hoge showed tape of the Packers-Falcons game, he noted that the Falcons’ use of a spy did Rodgers a favor.
“They’re only going to rush three because they’re spying Aaron Rodgers,” Hoge said. “You’re taking someone out of getting after Rodgers.”
Ron Jaworski agreed, saying the Bears match up well with Rodgers without using a spy.
“The Chicago Bears will not play that spy stuff,” Jaworski said. “They line up and they play their defense.”
The Bears’ defense clearly matches up better with Rodgers than the Falcons’ defense does: In two games against the Falcons this season, Rodgers completed 57 of 71 passes for 710 yards, with four touchdowns and no interceptions. In two games against the Bears this season, Rodgers completed 53 of 73 passes for 545 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
