Tony Gonzalez will return in 2011
Give Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez credit for not stretching out his retirement decision any longer than necessary.
Speaking on Rome is Burning on ESPN Friday, Gonzalez confirmed he’ll be back for his 15th NFL season and third in Atlanta.
His foot speed has greatly diminished of late, which showed up in 9.4 yards-per-catch average. His 70 catches and 656 yards were both season lows for Gonzalez since 1998. That’s the bad news.
The good news is that he was still second on the team in catches, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. Gonzo remains an integral part of the Falcons offense; the team just needs to find more speed on the outside to complement him.
