Bears claim OL Edwin Williams off waivers

If the Chicago Bears want a few days to talk Edwin Williams into signing with them on their practice squad, they’ve got it now.

The Bears claimed the interior offensive lineman off waivers from the Washington Redskins on Wednesday, bringing him in 72 hours before final cuts to 53 are due. Williams will not play in the team’s preseason finale on Thursday at Cleveland and barring something unexpected, he will not make the final roster.

But the Bears do like him and they probably hope to start him off on the developmental squad. An undrafted free agent from Maryland last year, Williams played in four games with the Redskins and made two starts at right guard. He’s practiced primarily at center, where the Bears have mainstay Olin Kreutz.

Bears offensive line coach Mike Tice also attended Maryland and Bears pro scout Dennard Wilson played at Maryland and also prepped at DeMatha High in Hyattsville, Md., like Williams.

The Bears waived undrafted rookie free agent running back Brandon Minor to make room for William.
