SF Signs RB Brian Westbrook

From Footballguys:

Looks like the reservations about Michael Westbrook going to the Rams were well founded. Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee is reporting that the 49ers have signed Brian Westbrook.

Clipped from the Matt Barrows article: The 49ers have struck a one-year deal with free-agent running back Brian Westbrook, according to a source. Westbrook, 30, was released by the Eagles in March after an eight-year career. The last two years have been marred by an array of injuries, including two concussions in 2009. The 49ers, meanwhile, began searching for a veteran running back on Friday after running back Glen Coffee unexpectedly told the team he was retiring. The paperwork for Coffee's retirement was filed this morning, meaning Coffee is officially no longer with the team and there is an open roster spot.

We told you last week that Frank Gore should get a bump with the surprise retirement of Glenn Coffee. 49er RB Anthony Dixon looked poised to take over the #2 RB spot and his value was rising. Now with Westbrook signing, it feels like things go back to where they were this time last week when Coffee was still there. Westbrook is clearly past his prime but he's a guy that can contribute. Gore drops down just a bit (but is still obviously an elite RB) and Dixon drops back down to his previous level.

Steven Jackson remains the sole productive RB in St. Louis and will likely be asked to carry a huge load again.
