Unbeknownst even to me was the late season surge by the New York Jets. I had previously assumed that they might be a possible candidate for the 'pretenders' category rather than among the 'contenders'. However, they were impossible not to notice as they shot up the Football ERA Cumulative Standings at the end of the season. By Week 17 the Jets were ranked high.
However, the Cumulative Scores are not to be used for a Ranking System at all. Nor is it a Power Rankings or any kind of standings a la a "Chess Ladder" or Tennis Ranking where the teams are ranked by who will win versus others. RATHER, it is how teams change in the Cumulative Ranks that determines who is trending upwards (the First Derivative). Clearly, the Football ERA can be used to capture trends, and this has proven usefull in all the previous years that Cumulative Scores have been published here.
