Redskins get to 53, keep four quarterbacks

With question of whether Robert Griffin III has been cleared clearly unclear and Kirk Cousins dealing with a sprained foot, the Redskins have decided — for now — to keep four quarterbacks on the roster.
The Redskins have reduced to 53 players, and both Pat White and Rex Grossman have survived.
It doesn’t mean they’ll be on the roster for Week One, or even by tomorrow.  It only means that, as of right now, they both have jobs.
Those who don’t have jobs with the Redskins include the players who have been waived:  defensive lineman Chigbo Anunoby, receiver Dezmon Briscoe (waived-injured), linebacker Marvin Burdette, linebacker Will Compton, running back Tristan Davis (who had been on the exempt/left squad list), receiver Skye Dawson, safety DeJon Gomes, defensive end Dominique Hamilton, running back Jawan Jamison, receiver Lance Lewis, center Kevin Matthews, cornerback Chase Minnifield, tackle Xavier Nixon, tight end Emmanuel Ogbuehi, linebacker Vic So’oto, offensive lineman Tevita Stevens, and receiver Nick Williams.
Gomes had been a fifth-round pick in 2011.  Jamison was a seventh-round selection in 2013.
The Redskins also terminated three vested veterans:  defensive tackle Ron Brace, tackle Tony Pashos, and running back Keiland Williams (with an injury settlement).

Report: Bills to put Kevin Kolb on IR

If Bills quarterback Kevin Kolb hadn’t suffered a concussion during the preseason, the Bills possibly would have cut him, avoiding a base salary of $1.65 million and a roster bonus of $250,000.  They’ll now avoid the roster bonus, but not the base salary.
According to Joe Buscaglia of 550 WGR, the Bills will place Kolb on injured reserve.  Technically, he would be waived from IR or released with an injury settlement, reducing the team’s total financial obligation even more.  Either way, he won’t play for the Bills in 2013.
The Bills, per Buscaglia, also will place receiver Brad Smith and fullback Drew Smith on injured reserve.
For Kolb, it could be the end of the line.  A second-round pick in 2007, he bounced from Philly to Arizona and then to Buffalo, with a fairly routine hit putting him out of action indefinitely.

Report: Sanchez unlikely to play Week One

Publicly, the Jets and quarterback Mark Sanchez continue to say nothing about whether his shoulder injury will cause him to miss the regular-season opener.  Privately, it’s looking more and more obvious that Sanchez won’t be able to play.
During Thursday night’s edition of Pro Football Talk (5:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN), Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reported that Sanchez likely will miss the Week One game against the Buccaneers.
If Sanchez doesn’t play, it means he can’t throw any interceptions to former teammate Darrelle Revis, who’ll now have to settle for giving rookie Geno Smith a baptism by blast furnace.
Look for the Jets to continue to stay quiet for as long as possible about Sanchez, if for no reason other than to keep the Buccaneers guessing about whether they’ll face Sanchez or Smith.
Even if they’re not guessing.

Yes, Robert Griffin III will start Week 1

Not that there was any doubt, but Robert Griffin III is starting Week 1.
Griffin, who has been saying all offseason that he’ll be ready to go for the start of the season, will indeed be the starter on Monday, September 9 when the Eagles visit Washington. That’s the word from Adam Schefter of ESPN, who reported the widely expected news this morning.
Although he has missed the entire preseason, all indications have been that Griffin made outstanding progress after suffering a torn ACL in Washington’s playoff loss to Seattle. Dr. James Andrews compared Griffin’s recovery to that of Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, who tore his ACL a year before Griffin and managed not only to return for the 2012 season but to be the league MVP.
The season opener comes just over eight months after Griffin suffered the knee injury on January 6. That’s a quick recovery, but Griffin says he’s running as well as ever. We’ll get to see for ourselves next Monday night.

Doug Marrone says Manuel would need a few days of practice to play opener

The only things standing between Jeff Tuel becoming the first undrafted rookie to start at quarterback on opening day in modern history are a possible injury, Matt Leinart and the return of E.J. Manuel from his recent knee surgery.
Coach Doug Marrone addressed the possibility of Manuel’s return on Tuesday, saying that Manuel started working out Sunday but that he hasn’t resumed throwing the ball yet. Manuel has been telling the coach that he’s ready to play, but Marrone said that he’d be relying on doctors to give him the green light for Manuel’s return to work. Marrone also outlined when that green light would have to come in order for Manuel to play against the Patriots.
“If the doctor said, ‘You’re not going to get him on that field until Thursday, and then he’ll be ready to play on Sunday,’ I would be concerned about doing that,” Marrone said, via Tim Graham of the Buffalo News. “If they said, ‘Hey, we can get him on that field on Monday or Wednesday, I would see how he played and make a decision.”
Marrone added that the days were necessary for him to decide whether Manuel is ready to play or if he needs more time to knock off the rust that built up while he was recovering. It might not be the likeliest outcome for Buffalo, but it is one that won’t be ruled out until the team’s absolutely sure he can’t play.

Report: Bills fear Kevin Kolb’s concussion may be career-ending

The news on Bills quarterback Kevin Kolb, who left Saturday’s preseason game with a head injury, appears to be very bad.
Tim Graham of the Buffalo News reports that the Bills are concerned Kolb’s concussion may be career-ending, and they’re proceeding with that in mind.
The concussion suffered on Saturday was at least the third of Kolb’s career, and in today’s NFL, multiple concussions are taken very seriously.
The Bills are acting like a team that expects to have a real need at quarterback: They signed Matt Leinart and traded for Thaddeus Lewis today. NFL teams have to reduce their rosters to 75 players by Tuesday, and the Bills wouldn’t add two quarterbacks at a time when they have to cut down elsewhere if they weren’t worried about the availability of both Kolb and EJ Manuel, the first-round pick who suffered a preseason knee injury.

Report: Brady likely to practice Thursday

Everyone with an interest in seeing the Patriots win games this season held their breath a little bit when word of Tom Brady’s knee injury broke, but the exhalations that started with news of a clean MRI can continue unabated.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Brady will be re-examined in the morning by doctors and that he is likely to practice on Thursday if the diagnosis remains unchanged from Wednesday.
There’s no mention of Brady’s status for Friday night’s game against the Buccaneers. The more time that Brady has to work with a new group of receivers the better, although any benefit would have to outweigh a potential aggravation of the injury. Should Brady practice with the team on Thursday, it would seem to be a pretty good signal about his availability for the second preseason game.
And it would be an excellent signal for the start of the regular season, which is far more important given the fears that briefly rolled across New England on Wednesday afternoon.
